Anatomy is two or three semester course in the first year. Though being one of the most difficult subjects to pass during studies, Anatomy including two dissection courses is fairly popular among medical students.
Library of the Depatrment that was recently completely reconstructed is seen on the photo. It includes around 4000 titles, including some unique ones that can't be found in any other library in the country.

Professors explain the syllabus (the papers students are reading) and answer students questions, mostly regarding final exam.
All major exams including Anatomy are taken oraly, usually with short written entrance test. At least two examiners are present during the exam.

Among quite unique features of the Department is extensive Museum of comparative anatomy. Skeletons and speciments of various animals including fragments of prehistoric ones offers an interesting way how to remember and understand human anatomy in evolutional context.

Practical part of Human Anatomy course includes classes and dissections. Two two-weeks dissection intense courses should provide integration of the knowledge gaind in preceeding classes. Every single student has plenty of opportunities to participate in authopsy and thus get unique experience and insight into human body.
Dissection rooms together with the whole building were recently completely reconstructed, preserving original architectonical style and disposition, including a very valuable furniture.
Students ask about dissection course and level of knowledge required during subsequent exam. Some anatomy modles can be demonstrated. For legal and epidemiological reasons, it is not possible to perform a sample disection lab.

Physiology deals with understanding to body functions and mechanisms that maintain these functions within normal limits. Together with Pathophysiology these disciplines try to provide the most valuable answer in medecine - what is the reason of disseases and so what should be the treatment strategy.
By many students Hunman Physiology final exam is thought to be the most difficult one and who passes, usually succeeds in the rest of the studies.
Here, introduction of Physiology is presented by prof. Kittnar and the crucial difference between physiology as a functional discipline to many other subjects that are mostly descriptive is explained. Early understanding this difference means success or failure at the final exam.

During the visit, two sample labs from Human Physiology are taken:

  • Ambulatory ECG monitoring, i.e. up to 24 hour constant ECG recording
  • Blood group estimation

Here the analysis of an ECG record taken previous afternoon/night from a volunteer student is performed. This is a great example of variability of body functions (here cardiac) and the fact, that real data obtained from realand healthy subject might significantly differ from typical textbook findings.

The computer screen of a program used for off-line analysis of ECG monitoring. On the picture, few seconds of cca 4-hour electrocardiogram of a volunteer student can be seen . The ECG traces are fairly normal. Though during the whole recording, few moments of atypical activity can be found.

After two previous busy days (and sometime nights), the morning seminar, though short, is quite tiring.
